Hi there! If you’re looking for paradise, you’ve arrived. Huatulco is that little corner on Mexico’s South Pacific coast where the jungle and the sea go hand in hand. We take great pride in our beaches—not only are they the most beautiful, but they are also the cleanest and best-preserved in the country. That’s why we love it when our visitors help us keep them looking this stunning.
What you’ll love most is our nature. Our jungle transforms throughout the year: for six months, it’s a deep, cinematic green, and for the other half, it turns a dry earthy brown with a unique beauty that only we truly know. The vibe here is calm, safe, and friendly—the perfect plan if you’re coming with family or your partner to unplug and simply enjoy.
You’re probably wondering: where should I stay in Huatulco? There are many options, but as locals, we at Stays Huatulco want you to experience the destination like one of us, with total comfort and confidence.
In this guide, we’ll walk you through the best vacation rentals in Huatulco and explain why each area has its own special charm. We’ll take you from the tranquility of Sector N and the hidden gem of El Arrocito, to the authentic local flavor of our town, La Crucecita. Come on in—we’ll take care of you just like home!
Here in Huatulco, you don’t just come for a vacation; you come to reconnect with what truly matters. We have that perfect blend of the ocean’s power and the jungle’s peace. It’s a place that forces you to slow down, breathe clean air, and remember what it feels like to be alive. It’s no coincidence that we are one of the few destinations in the world that takes ecology seriously—here, we cherish what we love.

Imagine 9 bays and 36 beaches, each with its own personality. From the famous Santa Cruz Bay, where the heart of tourism beats and cruise ships arrive, to Cacaluta, which is pure untouched nature (you likely saw it in the movie Y tu mamá también). Huatulco isn’t just "a beach"; it’s a system of 9 bays, each with its own magic. Here’s a breakdown so you can pick your favorite:
San Agustín: A local favorite. Its waters are so calm they feel like a giant swimming pool. It’s the perfect spot to spend the whole day eating delicious food at the local beachfront restaurants. The seafood variety here is next level!
Chachacual: Welcome to the untouched territory of the National Park. Accessible only by boat (about 10 minutes from Santa Cruz), you’ll find Playa La India and Playa Chachacual. They offer unreal beauty, crystal-clear blue waters, and absolute peace. If you love snorkeling, the "El Jicaral" reef is just steps from the shore. Pure nature, zero concrete!
Cacaluta: Literally a cinematic bay. It is majestic, wide-open, and completely wild. This is the place to disconnect from the world and admire the vastness of the Pacific.
El Órgano: Maguey’s quiet neighbor. It has very little human contact, golden sand, and transparent waters. You can arrive by boat, but if you’re feeling adventurous, take the jungle trail on foot (about a 15-minute walk). Seeing the biodiversity up close is a truly rewarding experience!
Maguey: Easily accessible by land or sea. This is the ideal beach to forget your stress, play some beach volleyball or soccer, and enjoy time with the family. It has more services and restaurants, so you’ll have everything you need for a perfect day in the sun.
Santa Cruz: The heart of the action. This bay is home to La Entrega (famous for snorkeling), Playa Santa Cruz, and the romantic Playa El Amor. The waters are warm with gentle waves, making it ideal for children or seniors. It’s the meeting point where everything happens.
Chahué: Our "social" bay. Located close to La Crucecita, it features a stunning blue-green hue. The waves are strong, so it’s not the best for swimming, but it’s a local favorite. We come here to watch the sunrise, fly kites, have picnics, or eat pizza under the stars. (Local tip: Take your trash with you and leave the seashells where they belong!).
Tangolunda: This is where you’ll find a touch of luxury. It’s the main hotel zone and features a golf course. It’s made up of five white-sand beaches like Playa Ventura, Manzanillo, and Tornillo. Perfect if you want all the amenities at your fingertips.
Conejos: Home to four hidden gems: Conejos, Punta Arenas, Tejoncito, and Magueyito. You can reach them by walking from nearby hotels, taking a taxi from La Crucecita, or by catamaran to see them from the sea. It is the definition of visual peace.

Although it’s not a bay per se, La Bocana has a vibe you can't miss. It’s where the Copalita River meets the sea. It’s a surfer’s paradise with a super laid-back atmosphere. You can enjoy a famous mud bath, witness incredible sunrises, and watch how the landscape constantly shifts throughout the year. It’s pura vida!
Huatulco is not just a tourist development; it’s a place with a history you can feel in its streets. To start, our name has a mystical meaning: Huatulco comes from the Nahuatl word "Quauhtolco," which means "place where the wood is adored." This refers to the legendary Cross of Huatulco, which—as the story goes—was planted in the sand of Santa Cruz Bay long before the Spaniards arrived. Legend says no one could move or destroy it, not even the pirates like Francis Drake who once haunted our shores.
It’s important to understand our geography: Santa María Huatulco is our municipal seat, a traditional town in the highlands, while the Bays of Huatulco is the coastal development we all love. This duality gives us the best of both worlds: the mysticism of a Oaxacan village and the freshness of the Pacific Ocean.
Get ready to eat like royalty! The cuisine here is like a warm hug for the heart.
Delights from the Land: You cannot leave without trying tlayudas with tasajo (that thin, salted beef that is pure heaven) or a black mole so complex and deep you’ll fall in love. The flavor here is authentic because we use regional ingredients, like fresh quesillo (string cheese) and handmade tortillas.
The Sea on Your Plate: At the beachfront palapas of Maguey Bay or San Agustín, the feast comes from the ocean. Imagine garlic butter shrimp, pescado a la talla (grilled butterflied fish), or a pineapple stuffed with seafood—all fresh from the water.
For the Toast: Artisanal mezcal is our sacred drink. Whether it's joven, reposado, or a flavored "cremita," mezcal is meant to be sipped slowly—or as we say, "taken in little kisses." And for the mornings, there’s nothing like café de olla (spiced coffee) made with beans from the coffee plantations right here in our mountain highlands.

If you love action and real contact with the earth, you won’t be bored for a single second here in Huatulco. The best thing about our town is that our biggest gym is nature itself.
Cycling and running are part of daily life here. Many people head out to pedal or run in the late afternoon, just as the sun goes down and the heat gives us a break. It’s the perfect moment to breathe the cleanest air you can imagine and discover the hidden corners of our town while you exercise.
If you want an experience that will stay with you forever, you have to take a sunrise kayak tour. Setting out from Playa La Entrega when the sea is like a mirror and watching the sun break over the horizon is, literally, pure magic.
For marine life lovers, snorkeling in San Agustín or La Entrega is a must; you’ll be amazed by the coral reefs and the sheer number of colorful fish. If you prefer solid ground and adrenaline, jump on an ATV tour to explore jungle trails that lead to hidden beaches where mass tourism doesn't reach.
This is an experience everyone who visits us should try. Imagine heading out to fish and returning with a fresh catch to prepare right then and there: some authentic tiritas de pescado (fish strips). With red onion, habanero for that tasty kick, a touch of oregano, plenty of lime juice, and, of course, served with those crispy golden tostaditas you only find at the local market... Ufff, that is a taste of heaven on earth!
Participating in a sea turtle release is one of those experiences that changes your perspective; watching the tiny hatchlings find the sea is truly unique. And if you come during the season (December to March), whale watching will leave you speechless.
Don't forget the tours to the Cascadas Mágicas de Copalitilla (Magic Waterfalls), where the spring water washes away any fatigue. To top it all off, there are bar and food tours—a route designed for you to taste a bit of everything, from the strongest mezcal to the most authentic culinary finds, truly immersing yourself in the Huatulco culture.

Our quintessential meeting point is La Crucecita. It was designed to be the center of the community. In its main plaza (the Zócalo), you’ll experience the true Huatulco vibe: the aroma of coffee, the music, and the warmth of our people.
A must-visit here is the Parish of Our Lady of Guadalupe. You’ll be left speechless when you look up: the ceiling features the largest painting of the Virgin of Guadalupe in the world (measuring over 20 meters). It’s an impressive work of art that blesses locals and travelers alike. Walking through these streets at sunset, surrounded by vibrant colors and the sound of local chatter, is the best way to understand why anyone who visits Huatulco always wants to return.

Whether in the bays of Huatulco or in Puerto Escondido, we are locals guiding you. When you choose our Huatulco rentals or our stays in Puerto, you aren't just renting a place—you’re getting the experience of discovering the coast through the eyes of those who actually live here.

Getting to paradise is easy, but knowing how to get around will save you both time and money. Here are the best tips from those of us who actually live here:
Huatulco International Airport (HUX) is small but very efficient. We receive direct flights from Mexico City (you’ll be here in less than an hour), Monterrey, and several international destinations from the US and Canada during the high season. The best part of the airport is its architecture—those palm-leaf "palapa" roofs welcome you with that perfect coastal vibe!
Here is a local trick: When you exit, you’ll see the official airport taxis (yellow and white). They are very comfortable and safe, but they charge a higher federal rate.
Pro Tip: If you’re traveling light and want to save some money, you can walk a few steps outside the airport boundary to the main highway to catch a local taxi. However, for the ultimate comfort when heading to our properties like Casa Forza or Loft Arrocito, we recommend booking a private transfer in advance. Ask us, and we can help you coordinate one so a driver is waiting for you with your name on a sign!
Huatulco is a destination where you don’t really need to rent a car unless you plan on exploring distant villages.
Local Taxis: These are the lifeblood of transportation here. They are safe, clean, and have fixed rates based on zones. They don’t use meters, so always ask: "How much to La Crucecita?" or "How much to Sector N?" before getting in. Generally, moving between the main bays is very affordable.
Public Transportation: There are "Urvans" (collective shuttles) that run from Santa Cruz to La Crucecita and other sectors for just a few pesos. It’s a very authentic and budget-friendly experience.
On Foot or by Bike: As mentioned before, Huatulco is very pedestrian-friendly. Many areas, like Chahué and La Crucecita, are best enjoyed walking or cycling under the shade of the trees.
